8.16.23

Kinda slept in a little.  We slept a little better last night.  Got up and had an amazing breakfast at the inn.  Such an amazing place!

We decided to get one more overnight in at one of our most favorite spots, Bromely mountain.  It's a bit of a haul up the mountain and just as we remembered it.  But the ski hut we stayed in last year has some improvements.  A FRIGGIN DRYER!!!  We remembered they have power up here so people can charge their stuff but the put in a dang dryer!  That is a huge gift for hikers.  Lot of AT hikers up here hanging out and drying stuff.

On the way up we totally ran into one of the SOBO AT hikers we met giving away soda yesterday!  Late Start.  And later on met another SOBO hiker we'd helped yesterday who's name I forget. 

We explored the area a little.   Walking down another path that leads to the ski resort.  We didn't walk all the way down or anything but just around.  It was just so stupidly foggy. 

We aren't getting the views we had last year sadly.  It was supposed to clear up. We're hoping maybe after dark it might and we can get a glimpse at the Persids meteor shower.

Well.  A very large, loud and VERY young group of AT hikers showed up and absolutely took over the ski hut.  We knew they'd be up all night so we opted to go back down to the shelter a mile down the hill.   We weren't getting a sunset anyway so not a huge deal.  Annoying for sure but not the worst thing in the world.  

As luck would have it a group of 3 guys older than us were at the shelter.  We had a great time chatting before bed.  Shortly after a mom and her 8 year old son showed up!  We made a great decision.

    Sounds crowded for sure, isn't that a bit unusual for people who want to get away. Cool pictures of the fog, but I can see you wouldn't be able to enjoy scenery. I've walked down a ski slop before and found it rather difficult with loose rock, really had to watch my footing. Happy Trails to you.

The Long Trail, Part Deux

We're just a few days form leaving to head back out to Vermont to pick up where we left off and get the last 91 miles done!   We're both feeling less prepared and in way worse shape than last year.  So that's fun!!  That said, we have a better idea of what we're in for and have made a few gear swaps to hopefully save us some weight.  And we sat down with the map, Far Out and OnX to make a loose plan of attack for easier days with lower miles, leaving room to get more in if we're feeling ok any day.  With this plan we can finish in about 12 days.  We're planning on 2 weeks but I have a feeling we'll get more miles in towards the end.   There are fewer resupply stops which means carrying more food with us, unfortunately.  And we're also starting at the hardest part of the entire trail.  But we're still excited to have this done. Zaleski May 2023

 After changing our plans SEVERAL times, we decided to go to Zaleski in southeastern Ohio for the weekend.  Leaving Friday mid day and coming back Sunday.  Originally we'd planned to leave early Friday morning and go to Shawnee state park for some good hill climbing to wake up our winter legs.  But Brendan was stuck at work until 3:30AM and I didn't sleep either.  Sleep felt more urgent so we slept in a bit and reevaluated our options.   The routes at Shawnee did not lend themselves well to a half day hike so we shifted for Zaleski.  Parking at the main lot by the schoolhouse we filled out the registry form and took off! Day 1: 2.7 miles Day 1 was SUPER short, just 2.7 miles to camp 1.  We go there plenty early and camp 2 was only another 4.3 miles but neither of us were feeling well from the night prior so we set up a nice little spot and just chilled.  I swear my favorite part of this is turning off my phone and just sitting.  Or in this case, laying in a hammock!
