Upper Peninsula Day 3
By through hiking standards we really slept in today waking up about 6 45. But We only have about five and a half miles to hike To our next site and we have literally all day to do it. So we spent morning making breakfast and drinking our coffee and Enjoying the absolute gorgeous weather. ( Not quite crisp but very cool) There was a tiny bit of bird chatter in the distance and the Chipmunks still bickering away. But still very quiet and very still here. It's been absolutely Lovely Not worrying about emails, text messages, Phone calls or anything. (Literally no service this entire time)
A little bit of this trip is felt weird because our last real backpacking trip was a through hike. Backpacking a smaller distance over less time requires very different mindset as well as gear And neither one of us were really prepared for this style of backpacking again. Some things we over packed some things we under packed But overall we have everything we need.
Being out in the wilderness Shows very much Our differences And our similarities. One of us was raised by two Boy Scouts And one of us was raised by House full of hippies. Which is oddly similar in some ways.
We set off around 9 and really took our time. First mile was up Government Peak. (Not all that high really).
Today's hike was absolutely beautiful. Some up and down but mostly flat. We got to a lovely waterfall and took a good hour break to eat lunch and refill water and just relax and soak in the silence of the forest.
After a lunch a scant mile to our campsite. Its just idyllic. Like a picture perfect campsite. Pine forest, nice sittin logs around a fire ring, bear pole in the distance and right next to a stream. White noise all day all night.
We arrived at around 2pm. I'm a very restless person by nature so this can be a downside. So o did some creek laundry and looked around for firewood, after we set up the tent. Brendan took a little nap. I am kicking myself for not bringing my hammock. ( And before anybody starts hollering at me in the comments, Campfires ARE permitted and we are allowed to forage felled wood. We spoke with a ranger on the way in)
And also before anyone asks, yes I brought bourbon. 😁
After my own little nap I indulged 8 year old Nikki and played in the creek for awhile and found a neat rock:
Then we just sat for an hour or so. Literally. Just sat in silence. And it was wonderful. After dinner we were successful in starting a fire. Unlike last night we have neighbors tonight so we have to be a little more cautious with our side quests to potty.
At one point Brendan asked what time it was and guessed it was close to 8pm. It was 6:30. Lol. Its fun to be bored for a change!
We looked at the map to figure out tomorrow. Tomorrow we hike back to the car. Its looks like we have about 6 miles so if we get up abd moving a little earlier than today we should be back by lunch. Then 3.5 hour drive to our next stop!
Quotes of the day:
If you've reached 50 years and you haven't shit yourself AT LEAST once....um that's probably good.
